The 2014 Kia Soul, Winning Touch

If you are like me, the level of disappointment with most of the touchscreens in cars is frustrating.  Most of them use resistive technology, which is notoriously unresponsive.  But there is hope.

Finally the 2014 Kia Soul has a massive 8 inch touchscreen that’s capacitive, like the one on your smartphone.  It is much more responsive but still isn’t distracting.  Far from it, it was a helpful driving aid that worked consistent and reliable.  In Navigation mode, it was easy to swipe on a map all around a geographic area.  There was no delay or sudden jumps like the other less responsive units.

After connecting an iPhone 5S, it was easy to upload a song list and swipe through artists and songs.  It was just like using the phone itself.  Pandora app, which syncs to your phone but still shows most features on the touch screen was well responsive also with a one finger press.

I also give Kia brownie points for combining features into one main view.  You can see the navigation map and the current song on one screen.  They also improved the display above the steering wheel and made it more readable.  To get an aftermarket touchscreen of this quality, you would be paying for one of the highest-end units that the premium electronic companies offer.  That will cost you premium bucks.
